'Welcome to Cornwall'

Over centuries, the continuous invasions of Britain has led to an eclectic of languages, dialects and cultures dotted across the isle. The Celtic language flourished within settlements, and became universally spoken. With years of foreign invaders; armies of Roman soldiers, Viking warfare and Norman conquests, Celtic communities were pushed to the corners of the isles, forming a hypernym for the varying Celtic languages.

Cornish is now considered to be a reviving language, as the county lost its last speaker of Cornish in 1777, a Mousehole local named Dolly Pentreath. By the 19th Century, the spark of the Cornish dialect was lit once again by Henry Jenner, the author of 'Handbook of the Cornish Language', sparking interest to revive. By 2010, UNESCO proclaimed that the language is now considered 'critically endangered' as opposed to 'extinct' - a monumental moment for the Cornish county.

- The GoCornish programme has introduced the Cornish language into 6000 schools.

Synopsis: Inheriting property after her husband's death, artist Maddie struggles with grief, her stepdaughter, and artistic inspiration, whilst learning the rich history absorbed in the house's structure.

Salt Path

Written by Raynor Winn

Inspired by: The 630 mile coastal peninsula connects readers, and visitors, back to the natural world. Inspired by coastal towns located on the south west path; Padstow, Bude, Newquay, Hollywell, Port Isaac.

Synopsis: Accumulation of debt, betrayal and poor health, Ray and Moth decide to just 'walk'. A 630 mile coastal walk from Minehead to Poole. Relying on a weekly £40, they reconnect with nature, tackling coastal weathers and begin to face the wind head high again.

Mousehole Cat

Written by Antonia Barber

Inspired by: Visits and research into Cornish folklore, surrounding fishing stories in the town of Mousehole, Cornwall. Folklore that to this day is still celebrated - Tom Bowcock’s Eve, 23rd December.

Synopsis: Storms sit patiently outside the harbour of Mousehole, the 'storm cat' awaiting its prey and luring the fishing boats into its crashing waves. A man and his cat venture out into the storm, in a quest to bring back fish for the hungry villagers, to make the famous 'star-gazy' pie.

Bone China

Written by Laura Purcell

Inspired by: A 'breath of fresh air', escaping to Cornwall for new starts. Cornish folklore of fairies and rituals. China clay played a pivotal part in location inspiration, drawing in ideas from Charlestown, Helston, and places such as Falmouth, Bodmin Moor and Carlyon Bay.

Synopsis: Consumption drives a family towards the Cornish coast, exploring how the 'sea coast' can cure the disease. Years later, Hester Why discovers that as she flees her own past, she is met by the family's secrets and dangerous past.

The Mermaid of Zennor

Inspired by: Mermaid folklore around the town of Zennor, North West Cornwall.

Synopsis: Where the sea kisses the land, stands a church. The mysterious woman sits in the pew and falls in love with the villager. Ignorant to the woman's nature, both man and maid disappear into the waters and Zennor will tell of legends of the man that fell in love with the mermaid.

The Cornish Girls

Inspired by: Cornish escapism during WW2. Set in Porthcurno, the hub of the Eastern Telegraph Company’s international links.

Synopsis: Venturing to Cornwall during the London Blitz, a group of women adjust to their new way of life, navigating love, grief and friendship, and showing strength above all else.

If Alfred Hitchcock is Neil Armstrong, then Polperro was his moon. Better known for his directing of Psycho (1960) and Vertigo (1958), Hitchcock became the first to capture Cornwall from behind a lens, with his work on 'The Manxman' (1929), enchanting the audience to a silent, black and white perception of the Cornish south coast. Cornwall soon became an inspiration to film makers and watchers alike.

Poldark

Written by Debbie Horsfield, Inspired by Winston Grahame 'Poldark'

Synopsis: Upon returning to Cornwall from the American Revolutionary war, Captain Poldark met with debt and turmoil, as the series chronical struggles of the time; financial and socio-economic struggles, and the hardships of the mining industry.

Cancer Research

Stood for a century, the Dunster Castle stands tall and the starting point for the South West Coast 50 Challenge, where goals can be met, records can be broken, and challenges be met with determination and pride. Trekkers can partake in 10k, 25k or 50k routes around the Exmoor national park, collectively raising money for Cancer Research, with loved ones in mind.

Perranporth Beach

Whether rain or shine, Perranporth beach is the perfect place to explore a stretch of coastline covered in sand dunes. The largest dune system in Cornwall, believed to have welcomed Saint Piran on his mill stone, has become a habitat for wildlife and a protector of the coast. The rigged dunes and sandy caves play a perfect game of hide and seek and rolling down the hills, only to pour sand out of wellies promptly after. This living landscape is a co-existence between land and people, and families can partake in activities that will educate as well as provide fun for all. Gwithian and Godrevy Lighthouse

Built in 1859, the Godrevy lighthouse stands guard of a once slate-ridden reef, inhabited by an array of birds. When trekking the coastal path, the lighthouse can be seen for miles, as well as its neighbouring pod of seals, sunbathing and performing to the audience of the cliff top. Be sure to bring your binoculars, as seal spotting in the bobbing waters keeps anybody in your party entertained.

Tehidy Woods

Puddle jumping and spotting animals are a must-do when visiting Tehidy Woods, where you will find like-minded families trying to tire their children with muddy trails. Cafes, woodlands and walks around mansions

Kennall-Vale Nature Reserve

Tucked behind the village of Ponsanooth, guests will find the Kennall-Vale nature reserve. Meandering around residential areas, the entrance to the woodland, almost drive-way like, will provide historic adventures into the past for all. Mind your footing as you explore through old gunpowder factories, listening for the ghostly reminders of explosions - sounds cushioned by the surrounding trees.

Coosebean Woodland

Become enchanted and succumb to the towering trees and fairy locals, for these Truro woodlands are a host to the Fair Headquarters. The network of fairy houses are hidden in trees and in plain sight, dotting along the trail with handcrafted signs to lead the way.

Great Flat Lode, Carn Brea Redruth

The circular route sits closely to Carn Brea; an area once known for its copper mining. The Tate, St Ives

With towering letters covering the side of the building, the Tate sits at the side of the road, overlooking the blue waters from big panel windows. What was once the home of Barbara Hepburn, the building now acts as a haven for art enthusiasts alike, as the art is conversed, heads are tilted and sculptured gardens are meticulously explored.

Attached to the newly refurbished Tate St Ives, Barbara Hepworth’s art is exhibited within her own house and gardens, blending coastal elements of wood, clay, stone and plaster, to depict the cohesion between nature and the modern world. Becoming one of the leading figures of modern British art, Hepworth’s gallery, workshop, and Cornish home, became a must-see for St Ives, snug deep into the cliffs of this seaside town.

Scenic Walk of St Ives Head

Tucked away on Porthmeor Road, the southwest coastal path leads you to the Porthmeor viewpoint, gazing across the beach from the cliff. Look out into the deep waters, and discover the legends of St La, where stories tell of an Irish Princess and Missionary sailed across from Ireland on a leaf, and built the Oratory, now being the St Ives Parish Church.

This coastal path, known as ‘The Island’, will trace the rocks edge, as you pass the St Nicholas Chapel, the Island Blockhouse, and St Ives Head. In these moments, take a moment to admire the rigged coastline, being able to look out to neighbouring beaches such as Hayle and Godrevy. My advice - bring binoculars to get a closer look, see if you can spot Godrevy Lighthouse, and its possible Seal sightings.

Come The Afternoon

Where the wharf meets the water, Brine is an excellent excuse to sit, eat and enjoy the view. The cafe offers an eclectic of flavours and fusing them with great wines and cocktail menus. A newly opened cafe with raving reviews should be at the top of any visitor’s itinerary.

Harbour Amusement Arcade, St Ives

A seaside trip is never complete without an arcade – Harbour Amusement Arcade brings the nostalgia back into any adult that is a child at heart. With games like race car driving to dance machine montages, and addictive behaviour on penny machines and claw games, the fun never stops. Top tip – ensure you have enough pennies for an ice cream from a local shop, to pick up your spirits following a claw machine defeat.

Exploring the Cornish Coast

As you cross the county border and breathe in the crisp Cornish air, you are met with English’s longest national trail – 300 miles of hiking opportunities. Expeditions begin, whether they are intricate sought-out plans or on-a-whim decision, the team at Creek and Country want to inspire you.

Stepping out onto the sandy beaches, look to the left – sand, to the right – opportunity to explore. With many of our properties being situated in the hustle and bustle of Falifornia, beaches and coastal walks are at your doorstep.

Despite Falmouth holding many beaches on its coastline; the seafront itself consisting of three established beaches, Maenporth Beach holds the heart of many Cornish visitors. What was once a natural harbour tucked away within a valley, now is perfect for anybody who is wanting to take full tidal advantage of what the beach has to offer.

As you are facing the beach, head up the right-hand side of the coastal cliff to join the trail. This non-stop meandering route will mould the granite cliffs and take you to a variety of secluded beaches and calm waters, where locals go to take a cold dip, warm picnic, and for exasperated dogs to cool down.

Keep your eyes peeled for the adjacent coast of St Anthony-In-Meneage as you pass Rosemullion Head, where sandy surfaces and wooded areas co-exist. Observe herons, Canada geese, and kingfisher take to the water for a tasty treat.

This 4.4 mile expedition concludes at the Helford Passage, where many weary travellers will stop at the Ferryboat Inn to quench their thirsts and fill their bellies. But the fun does not have to stop! The coastline continues beyond and can take you to neighbouring villages. Or why not hop onto the Helford ferry to see what else the Helford can offer you.

Flushing to Mylor

Flushing - Post 17th century, settled by a Dutch community, Vlissingen, also known as Flushing in Holland, acted as a smaller port for repairing and shipbuilding alongside its sister port of Falmouth. The village's smaller, more quant way of living, is evident in their narrow-cobbled streets as they meander around cosy cottages. But do not be fooled by the simple life – as two pubs that overlook the waters still allow for merriment and shanty sounds.

As you are facing the mighty rock of Falmouth, head due east towards the winding road that leads you to Flushing beach, which will be the first point of your journey. This coastal journey will show you a continuous beach from Flushing to Mylor, comforted by a rocky shore when the tide has not been friendly, however perfect for rock pooling. Tyre swings and misshaped rocks and wood make for perfect respite to take a load off and enjoy the view of Falmouth Docks.

The village of Mylor will greet you with open arms and an open road, leading you directly to the harbour. The harbour acts as a haven for boat owners and enthusiasts alike, as well as aspiring kayakers that launch into the calming waters.

Porthtowan – St Agnes – Perranporth

Tucked between vast coastline and surfable waves, Porthtowan acts as a hub for surf enthusiasts and miners alike. Overlooking the coast is Wheal Charlotte, the engine house and historic landmark, the old copper mine sits perfectly for onlookers to take in the seascape and search local history. Start your route with a coffee from the beach cafe and round of pool at the Blue Bar, then head up the cliff on your right to start your assent. Do not be fooled, as the steep pathway will be worth it as you take in the view, overlooking the tidal pools and tidal waves.

The winding coastal path will lead you to the quaint Chapel Porth, where travellers far and wide will coexist as they experience the ‘Hedgehog’; a brilliant blend of ice and clotted cream with a finish of hazelnuts, rolled onto a white canvas. The Porth Chapel Beach Café began the movement that is the quirky cream alternative.

St Agnes Head is straight ahead; the peninsula that begins a meandering journey to all caves and mines alike, with Perranporth Airfield sat on the coast with a sea view. Learn to fly or take a skydive - anything to bask in the northern coast sea air, even if it is at 120mph.

As you approach Perran Bay, take a pew and appreciate the vast length of coat that is Perranporth beach. After you have ventured across the sandy dunes and rocky pools, sit back and relax at the Watering Hole, positioned on the beach for 360° views and rattler on tap. Dependent on the seasons, many events take place on this waterfront, and all are welcome to come together and enjoy.

Close to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Pentewan beach neighbours holiday parks and idyllic restaurant scenes. ‘Europe’s largest garden restoration project’, Heligan is an escapism for explorers, plant enthusiasts, and anyone tempted by a hide-and-seek opportunity.

Tucked away behind the Seahorse Restaurant, off the B3273, trekkers will find the coastal path, beginning their quest along the Mevagissy Bay.

Pentewan Sands Sailing Club

The fields that align the rugged coast vertically lifts visitors into the clouds, battling the green turf and potentially muddy grounds. Gorse grows between land and sea, acting as a yellow observatory for guests to look out into the water. Creeks and bridges guide you to secluded beaches.

A scenic viewpoint for all travellers to experience is Polstreath Beach. As you near closer to Mevagissey, 110 steps will lead you down the cliff edge, following the curve of the rocks as they head out to sea. Do not let the steps deter you, as the view is spectacular, and beach is ever so secluded.

After partaking in beach etiquette, trek up the steps and turn left to Mevagissey. The fishing port is a haven for boats and fisherman, with its twin harbour hugging the village edge. Ferries to Fowey are accessibly available for visitors, braving the waters and exploring what can be found below. A bundle of coffee cafes and bustling pubs are around every corner, and visitors are welcomed to dust off their boots, take a seat and bask in fisherfolk and shanty tales.
