Some are perfect for families looking for a safe place to swim, others are ideal for paddleboarding or coastal walks, while a few remain hidden gems where you can escape the crowds altogether.

Whether you're planning a day by the sea during your holiday or looking to discover somewhere new, here are five of our favourite beaches near Falmouth and why we think they're worth visiting.

Gyllyngvase Beach

Best for families and first time visitors.

If you're only visiting one beach during your stay in Falmouth, Gyllyngvase is hard to beat.

Just a short walk from the town centre, Gyllyngvase is one of the most popular beaches in the area thanks to its golden sand, gently sloping shoreline and excellent facilities. It's also a Blue Flag award-winning beach, recognised for its high standards of water quality, safety and environmental management.

You'll also find public toilets, nearby parking and plenty of space to spread out, even on busier days. The calm waters often make it a great spot for swimming or simply relaxing with a book while watching boats sail in and out of Falmouth Bay. If you're staying into the afternoon or evening, Gylly Beach Café is a fantastic place to grab a pint or a bite to eat on the outdoor terrace while overlooking the beach.

Top Tip: Arrive before 10am during the school holidays if you're driving, as the nearby car parks fill up quickly on sunny days.

Swanpool Beach

Best for watersports and active days out.

Just along the coast from Gyllyngvase, Swanpool Beach has a slightly different feel. It's a favourite with visitors looking to do more than simply sunbathe.

The sheltered bay is ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking, with equipment available to hire during the season. Behind the beach sits Swanpool Nature Reserve, home to a freshwater lake and a variety of wildlife that's well worth exploring before or after your visit.

After a few hours on the beach, stop by the Beach House restaurant, where you can enjoy lunch or a drink overlooking the bay. If you've got a sweet tooth, it's also worth popping into Swanpool Beach Café, which is well known locally for its range of 'Quirkies' ice creams. One of our favourites is the MaltPleaser – a classic cone topped with Maltesers!

If you're keen to stretch your legs, the coastal walk from Swanpool to neighbouring Maenporth is well worth the effort. The route takes around 25 minutes and offers beautiful views across Falmouth Bay, making it one of our favourite short walks in the area.

Top Tip: If you're visiting on a warm summer's day, head down later in the afternoon. The beach is often a little quieter, and it's the perfect excuse to finish with an ice cream or a drink overlooking the sea.

Maenporth Beach

Best for a quieter beach day.

If you're looking for somewhere a little more peaceful, Maenporth is a great alternative.

Tucked into a sheltered cove just a few miles south of Falmouth, the beach is popular with families thanks to its calm waters, soft sand and relaxed atmosphere. At low tide, children can spend hours exploring the rock pools, while paddleboarders and kayakers often take advantage of the sheltered conditions.

There's a beach café overlooking the bay and parking just a short walk from the sand, making it an easy choice for a relaxed day by the sea.

If you're looking for a dog-friendly beach near Falmouth, dogs are welcome year-round on part of Maenporth Beach, although seasonal restrictions apply to the main bathing area during the summer months.

Top Tip: Visit around low tide if you're exploring with children, as the rock pools are full of fascinating marine life.

Durgan Beach

Best for escaping the crowds.

Hidden away on the Helford River, Durgan feels completely different from Falmouth's larger beaches.

Nestled at the bottom of Glendurgan Garden, this peaceful beach feels wonderfully tucked away from the busier parts of Cornwall. Surrounded by ancient woodland and overlooking the tranquil waters of the Helford River, it's the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

One of our favourite ways to experience it is by exploring the winding paths of Glendurgan Garden before making your way down to the beach with a picnic. It's an easy way to spend a relaxed afternoon, whether you're watching boats drift along the river or simply enjoying one of the quieter corners of the Cornish coastline.

Top Tip: Visit Glendurgan Garden first, then finish your afternoon with a picnic on the beach - it’s one of our favourite ways to experience this peaceful corner of Cornwall.

Grebe Beach

Best hidden beach near Falmouth.

If you enjoy finding places that feel tucked away, Grebe Beach is well worth seeking out.

Located on the Helford River near Mawnan Smith, this small, peaceful beach feels far removed from Falmouth's busier stretches of sand. It is reached on foot, which helps keep it quieter, and the views across the water make it a lovely spot for a calm afternoon by the river rather than a classic bucket-and-spade beach day.

There are no cafés, shops, toilets or other facilities at Grebe, so bring a picnic, plenty of water and everything you'll need for a few hours by the sea. That lack of facilities is exactly what gives the beach its charm, but it does mean a little planning makes the visit much more enjoyable.
